Bicarbonate is not only an indispensable ingredient in the kitchen - it's also a fantastic aid in the garden! With its natural properties, bicarbonate can be used to control pests, improve soil pH and even sweeten your tomatoes. Here are some clever ways to use bicarbonate for a greener and healthier garden.

-----------

  1. Counteracting powdery mildew:

    • Mix 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda, 2 tsp soap and 1 liter of water.

    • Spray the solution on plants affected by powdery mildew once a week until the problem disappears.

  2. Increase the pH of the soil:

    • Bicarbonate can help raise the pH of acidic soil.

    • Sprinkle some bicarbonate of soda around plants that prefer a more alkaline soil, like tomatoes and roses.

  3. Deter ants and slugs:

    • To deter ants, sprinkle bicarbonate of soda in anthills or in places where ants are active.

  4. Clean the wooden deck:

    • Rinse off the wooden deck.

    • Mix 2-3 dl of soap, 100 g of bicarbonate with 10 liters of water

    • Leave on for a few hours

    • Rinse off

  5. Refresh outdoor cushions:

    • Sprinkle with bicarbonate of soda and leave for about 20 minutes. Shake off and vacuum.

  6. Cleaning garden tools:

    • Use bicarbonate of soda to clean dirty utensils.

    • Mix bicarbonate of soda with water to create a paste and scrub the utensils with this mixture.

  7. Freshen up the compost:

    • Sprinkle some bicarbonate of soda in the compost heap to neutralize acidic smells and speed up decomposition.

  8. Control weeds:

    • Pour a thick paste of bicarbonate of soda and water directly onto the weeds.

    • Bicarbonate increases the sodium content of the soil which can kill the weeds.

  9. Sweeter tomatoes:

    • Sprinkle some bicarbonate of soda around tomato plants. It helps reduce the acidity of the soil, which can make the tomatoes sweeter.

By using bicarbonate in these ways, you can maintain a healthy and well-kept garden in a natural and environmentally friendly way.
