Baking Soda in the Garden – Simple Natural Tips

Here are a few practical ways baking soda can be used around the garden and outdoor areas.

1. Help control powdery mildew

Powdery mildew can appear on many garden plants.

  • Mix 2 teaspoons baking soda, 2 teaspoons liquid soap and 1 liter of water.
  • Spray the mixture onto affected plants.
  • Repeat once a week if needed.

2. Adjust soil acidity

Baking soda may help slightly reduce soil acidity.

  • Sprinkle a small amount around plants that prefer more alkaline soil.
  • Examples include tomatoes or roses.

3. Deter ants

  • Sprinkle baking soda near anthills or along areas where ants are active.
  • This may help discourage them from returning.

4. Clean wooden decks

Baking soda can also be used in outdoor cleaning.

  • Rinse the wooden deck with water.
  • Mix 2–3 dl liquid soap and about 100 g baking soda with 10 liters of water.
  • Apply the mixture and let it sit for a few hours.
  • Rinse thoroughly.

5. Freshen outdoor cushions

  • Sprinkle baking soda over outdoor cushions.
  • Let it sit for about 20 minutes.
  • Shake or vacuum the cushions.

This can help remove odors from outdoor textiles.
